JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind.–A driver went off a road and his car caught fire in Johnson County Monday morning.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) says the car was full of smoke when an officer got there and the engine compartment was burning with flames coming from under the hood. The car ended up in a ditch.

The accident happened at 4:50 on State Road 37 north of Stones Crossing Road.

The Bargersville Fire Department said they put the fire out. The driver was taken to IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with life-threatening injuries.

A witness told the JCSO they did not see the driver “beside me and he was off the road at that time” and said the car “left the road 500 to 600 yards prior to crashing.”

Investigators are trying to figure out what caused the crash.

The southbound side of State Road 37 closed because of the crash. It reopened around 6:45 a.m.
