FRANKLIN, Ind. — An inmate in the Johnson County jail has died.

Joan Ventura, a 28-year-old man from Indianapolis, was booked into the county jail in Franklin Saturday night. He had been wanted on outstanding warrants related to a probation violation in Greenwood, says Sheriff Duane Burgess.

“A Correctional Officer was performing a routine watch tour were inmates are checked hourly,” Burgess said. “During the 9:00 pm watch tour, 9:26 pm, Ventura was found in his cell unconscious, hanging.”

Burgess said jail officers did CPR until paramedics arrived who kept trying to revive him but to no avail. Ventura was pronounced dead.

The results of an autopsy haven’t been released yet.

Burgess clarifies in a press release that the jail did not have a staffing shortage because of concerns over the coronavirus the night Ventura was found dead.
