UPDATE: The person wounded in the shooting has been identified as Jeremy Ross, 37, of Terre Haute.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.–What started out as a traffic stop turned into a shooting in Terre Haute early Friday morning.

State police say at about midnight, a Terre Haute police officer pulled over a car on Wabash Avenue. That officer called for backup and an additional Terre Haute police officer showed up.

Investigators say a fight quickly ensued between the passenger of the car and one of the officers. During the fight, the passenger showed a gun, which prompted both officers to pull out their guns and fire at the passenger.

The passenger was hit with bullets and rushed to a hospital in Terre Haute with non-life-threatening injuries. One of the officers was also treated and released at a hospital.

State police have identified the officers involved as Sergeant Adam Loudermilk (15 years of service) and Patrol Officer Daniel L. Johnson (3 years of service). Both of them have been placed on administrative leave, which is customary in shootings like this.

State Police detectives are running the investigation.
