ANNISTON, Ala. — Federal health officials have called off a plan to transfer quarantined coronavirus patients to Alabama. The plan was canceled Sunday after residents and local officials in Calhoun County raised concerns. The federal government was planning to transfer patients from the Diamond Princess cruise ship that’s docked off the coast of Japan to a FEMA facility in Anniston. The city council voted Sunday to pursue legal action over the proposal, and hours later, federal and state officials announced a change in plans. About 300 U.S. citizens were evacuated off the cruise ship last week. Fourteen of those passengers have tested positive for coronavirus.
