INDIANAPOLIS — A man and woman were arrested after they were cornered during a police chase and tried to use their truck to hit police officers, one of whom fired at the truck, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.
Just after 8 p.m. Monday, police tried to make a traffic stop at Madison Avenue and East Epler Avenue on the south side. That’s about a mile southeast of the I-465 interchange with U.S. 31.
Police chased the truck to a dead-end near Gilbert Avenue and South East Street. Police stepped out of their cars and addressed the people in the truck on their public-address system. The driver of the truck continued to ignore the officers, said Sgt. Grace Sibley, an IMPD spokeswoman.
The suspects’ truck then made a U-turn and drove toward the officers who were outside their car. One of the officers fired shots at the truck.
“The officer on scene attempted to apprehend the suspect feared for her life and fired an unknown amount of shots at the vehicle striking the vehicle, but not striking the individuals inside the vehicle,” Sibley said.
The officer who fired the shots was injured, but the extent of her injuries was not immediately known. She was stable, Sibley said.
From the dead-end street, the pursuit resumed, but police couldn’t find the truck.
They eventually found it at the intersection of South East Street and Thompson Road. Another pursuit began, and the suspects’ truck hit several other vehicles, some of which belonged to police and others belonged to civilians, Sibley said.
Police eventually stopped the truck in the 900 block of U.S. 31 in Greenwood. That’s just north of Fry Road and west of Greenwood Park Mall. That’s where police apprehended the man and woman inside the truck.
