WHITELAND, Ind. — A couple accused of overdosing in the parking lot of a Whiteland truck stop last week while a little girl sat in the back seat of their vehicle has been arrested.
Initially, police could not arrest Samantha Jean Thompson and Michael Aron Tanner on drug charges since they did not find any drugs in the car. But they did recommend charges of neglect of a dependent to the Johnson County prosecutor.
Whiteland police were called to the Loves Travel Center on June 13 after receiving multiple reports of two people overdosing inside a vehicle with a child in the back seat.
Thompson told police that she had smoked some spice and couldn’t remember what had happened. The Department of Child Services took custody of the child and a warrant was issued for Tanner and Thompson’s arrests.
When police arrived they found a woman and an unconscious man outside the vehicle. EMT’s administered Naloxone to the man and both were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Instead, of being taken to jail, Thompson and Tanner were released after they were treated.
Gary Perkins is the little girl’s grandfather and he says Thompson and Tanner are family friends and occasionally watch his grand-daughter since he just had surgery and is unable to watch her as much as he used to.
Both have since been taken into custody Friday and face charges of neglect of a dependent.
