WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — This fall, students at Purdue will be able to add a minor that will teach them how to brew beer.

Purdue University is partnering with local breweries for new fermentation courses. The courses will be part of a new minor through the school’s food sciences division, according to WLFI-TV.

Funding for the new coureswork comes from local breweries, including People’s Brewing Company, which developed ‘Boiler Gold’ beer.

Jean Jensen, a brewing chemist at Purdue, said it’s important to teach the basics. Students will learn more than the fermentation process, like how to clean equipment, and the importance of using spotless equipment to brew.

Dr. Brian Farkas, who heads the Food Science Program, said the minor is a first step the department is taking to expand the program.

The minor has 18 credit hours.
