(INDIANAPOLIS) – You may be dreading the shutdown of I-65 on Sunday, but INDOT says you’d like keeping it open even less:The clock’s ticking toward a shutdown of I-65 in downtown Indianapolis on Sunday.
65 will be closed from Meridian Street to just north of Methodist Hospital. Southbound lanes at 465 on Indy’s northwest side will also be closed. INDOT Commissioner Joe McGuinness acknowledges it’ll make driving a pain, but says keeping one lane open would be worse. He says if INDOT kept one lane open, it’d mean three or four months of construction backups. By closing it completely, he says it should be done in five weeks at half the cost.
Both IUPUI and Crispus Attucks High School are inside the downtown construction zone. McGuinness says closing the road to speed up the work means the highway should be open again by the time school starts.
