There is a growing concern in Franklin, IN about dangerous contagions in the air. High levels of carcinogens, including Radon, TCE and PCE were detected in homes in Johnson County. There has been a high amount of pediatric cancer in Johnson County near the old Amphenol Corporation and Franklin Power Products site. The community was previously told that there was no significant reason for it to be happening. Nearly half the children who were diagnosed had lived near the contaminated area. The state viewed the results and determined that they could not rule it a cancer cluster.

Kari and Stacie are both moms who live in the Franklin area. They are members of the group #WhatIfItWasYourChild. They join Hammer and Nigel to share their concerns about the situation and how they think the city is responding.

“Many people in Franklin were not aware of the situation there… There are many industrial issues in Franklin. These are chemicals used in degreasers and solvents… So many kids in Franklin are getting sick. We are trying to figure out how many kids are being affected by this.” – Stacie

“We were finding chemicals in people’s living spaces. That really caught us off guard. Not in basements, but in living rooms and kitchens; dangerous levels of toxic chemicals that people are being exposed to.” -Kari
