PORTAGE, Ind. — A young boy has died and his sister is in critical condition after they were hit by a train  Tuesday morning in Portage.

Portage police say the children were walking along the railroad tracks near Woodland Village mobile home park just off of U.S. 20 when they were hit.

The CSX crew on board the train told police they saw the siblings on the tracks and blew the horn, but couldn’t stop in time.

Caleb Wilson, 3, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ellie Wilson, 2, was airlifted to a Chicago hospital in critical condition.

Portage Police believe the children sneaked out of the house to go play along the tracks. An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
