INDIANAPOLIS — A state lawmaker wants to try and block public funds for Roncalli High School in Indianapolis.

Under state law, private and religious educational institutions receive public money through the state’s school funding formula. Indianapolis Democrat Dan Forestal, who is a Roncalli alum, said the state needs to block any further public fund form going to his alma mater.

Roncalli has placed guidance counselor Shelly Fitzgerald on paid leave and has asked her to resign, all because she is married to another woman. Her marriage came to light after the school and the Archdiocese of Indianapolis got a copy of her marriage license.

“I remain a part of the Roncalli family, and that makes Shelly Fitzgerald a family member too,” Forestal. said. “Roncalli should not be rewarded with state dollars if they choose to discriminate against employees simply based on who they love.”

“The actions of Roncalli High School have unfolded in a manner that is contrary to the ideals I learned during my time there,” Forestal continued. “Roncalli should practice what they preach and reinstate Shelly Fitzgerald immediately and without any further consequences.”

Forestal said he will work to ensure that Hoosier tax dollars no longer fund “these discriminatory actions” by Roncalli High School. However, Forestal will be unable to introduce any sort of legislation on the matter until the General Assembly reconvenes.

The earliest he could do that is during the legislatures organization day in November.
