INDIANAPOLIS–A sentence of almost 25 years in prison was handed down to the man who beat up the owner of Acapulco Joe’s in downtown Indianapolis in March.
Maurice Dunlap pleaded guilty Wednesday to robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, aggravated battery, theft and fraud, as well as being a habitual offender. He also pleaded guilty to an unrelated robbery charge.
Dunlap was on a blind date at Acapulco Joe’s when he tried to pay for the bill with a stolen credit card. Dunlap attacked Acapulco Joe’s owner Grant Redmond when Redmond attempted to stop him from leaving the restaurant. Redmond was left badly beaten and unconscious.
Doctors were forced to remove a portion of Redmond’s skull to help reduce the pressure in his brain. Court documents said Redmond had difficulty talking and putting together cognitive thoughts after part of his skull removed.
Prosecutors say they reached a plea deal with that will have him serve a total of 24 years and 8 months in prison, to be followed by 5 years in community corrections. Six of those years come from Dunlap’s status as a habitual offender.
Dunlap was also given 1,700 days of backup time for violating his probation on four different cases.
