INDIANAPOLIS — Two people have been arrested for anti-Semitic vandalism at a Carmel synagogue, according to the office of U.S. Attorney Josh Minkler.
Nolan Brewer, 20, of Cloverdale, was arrested on a federal conspiracy to violate civil rights charge. The penalty is up to 10 years in prison, said U.S. Atty. Josh Minkler, at a Thursday press conference.
He said a search warrant was served in Cloverdale, after which Brewer was arrested..
Minkler said he believes Brewer had a co-conspirator. “That person is under arrest by the Carmel Police,” he said.
He said the search warrant turned up the cans of red and black spray paint used to paint symbols on the outbuilding. He said video surveillance shows Brewer and his partner buying the paint at a Walmart.
He didn’t answer questions about who the other person may be. He said he does not believe they were part of a larger conspiracy.
Swastikas and iron crosses were painted on a shed and garbage cans at Congregation Shaarey Tefilla on July 27. Surveillance video captured vandals burning something in front of the synagogue’s garage, according to congregation president Corey Freedman.
Minkler was joined by members of the FBI and the Carmel Police Department.
