FORTVILLE, Ind. — A new fire station being built in Hancock County will have a Safe Haven Baby Box when it’s complete.
Crews broke ground on the new Vernon Township fire station in Fortville last week.
The new Vernon Township fire station will be located at 600 Vitality Drive in the Town of Fortville.
The 14,000 square foot station will cost $4 million to build and will include individual living quarters for the volunteer fire department and emergency ambulance service personnel.
The baby box is included in the design, thanks to the expansion of Indiana’s law to allow them at fire stations that will be staffed 24 hours a day.
The law allows parents to surrender a healthy newborn anonymously and without fear of prosecution.
The fire station is expected to be complete in the spring of next year.
The Safe Haven Baby Box organization staffs a 24-hour hotline (1-866-99BABY1), so people can talk to trained professionals about possibly surrendering their baby. The hotline received calls Sunday regarding locations of baby boxes in the state of Indiana, according to a spokesperson.
