INDIANAPOLIS — An elderly veteran’s saxophone was stolen from his home while he was at church celebrating his 89th birthday, but he’s back to making music thanks to a generous act by the Indy Ten Point Coalition.
Someone broke into Cloice Dotson’s home along Claredon Road on July 15 while he and his wife were at church.
The thieves stole several items, including a saxophone he bought nearly 70 years ago.
“I’ve had that E flat alto sax ever since I was about 19 years old and I finally rounded up enough money to pay the $25 a month payment,” Dotson said. “Some things can be replaced, but some things you have sentimental value and you would cherish the rest of your life, and when they’re taken, it hurts.”
After learning what happened, volunteers with the Indy Ten Point Coalition stepped up to help and got a new saxophone for Dotson.
The group presented it to him Tuesday afternoon.
“This is a very quiet neighborhood and we have to protect our elderly people,” said Wallace Nash, Butler-Tarkington lead with the Indy Ten Point Coalition.
The saxophone was donated and repaired after volunteers put out a call for help on social media.
“At the end, love is going to be the winner,” said Dotson.
