DALEVILLE, Ind.–A 2-year-old boy who had been locked in a car outside an apartment in Daleville died Wednesday night.

Police were called to the Salem Place Apartments just east of I-69 on the south side of Daleville around 6:45. The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports that the boy had been in the car for about 2-3 hours.

A man across the street at the American Legion post heard about the boy and tried CPR, but he could not revive him.

Emergency responders rushed the boy to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie. Medical personnel attempted to save him, but they could not.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and Daleville Police Department have not confirmed if heat was a factor in the boy’s death as they continue to investigate.

“Right now we are taking witness statements. We will be doing some interviews. Right now, it’s still under investigation,” said Daleville Police Chief James King.
