LOGANSPORT, Ind.– A house fire claimed the lives of two children on Sunday in Logansport.

The Logansport Fire Department says the mother, Marlem Sosa, 25, called 911 around 1 a.m. She jumped out of an upstairs window and rescued 4-month old Nayvien Whitelow. Her two other children did not survive.

Those children have been identified as Cataleya Arellano, 5, and Jason Whitelow, Jr, 1.

The father was not home at the time of the fire because he had left for work. Firefighters told the Logansport Pharos-Tribune that there were no working smoke detectors in the home and they believe the fire to be accidental.

“It’s a great loss to the community. Our children are our greatest asset. When we lose two children in an accident like this, this community mourns and grieves,” Logansport Mayor Davie Kitchell told RTV6.

Cass County Deputy Coroner Rod Zeck says an autopsy will be performed Monday morning.
