CARMEL, Ind. — One of the the two conspirators arrested for vandalizing the Shaarey Tefilla Synagogue in Carmel has been indicted and faces federal civil rights violations and conspiracy charges..

Nolan Brewer, 20, faces a minimum of 10 months and up to 10 years in prison.

“Federal civil rights laws protect our rights to worship freely without threats or intimidation,” said U.S Attorney for Southern Indiana Josh Minkler. “Those who choose to deny anyone those rights by spreading hate and bigotry will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of federal law.”

The indictment alleges Brewer told co-workers about his admiration for Adolf Hitler. He also tried to recruit co-workers to his way of thinking,” said the court papers.

After the vandalism, Brewer and the other person who is also charged with the crime, exchanged text messages, excited about the news coverage the vandalism was getting.

Bright red Nazi flags and iron crosses were discovered back in late July on out buildings owned by Congregation Shaarey Tefilla.

Brewer and his co-conspirator, who is not being named by law enforcement or prosecutors, according to Minkler, were arrested in Cloverdale just two weeks after the graffiti was discovered.

“We put all available resources on this investigation because we do not take these actions lightly,” said Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard. “I am very proud of our police department and the other law enforcement agencies that worked together for this successful conclusion.”

The second person has not been indicted.
