BOONE COUNTY, Ind. — Police in Boone County say a man killed his son and daughter Friday morning before taking his own life.

Sheriff Mike Nielsen said the children’s mother called 911 after her children failed to show up to school Friday morning and her attempts to reach their father were unsuccessful.

Deputies forced their way into a home near State Road 32 and 900 East. Inside, they found 50-year-old Michael Hunn dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His son, 15-year-old Harrison Hunn, and daughter, 13-year-old Shelby Hunn, were found dead in their beds; both had been fatally shot.

Sheriff Nielsen said the deaths are being investigated as a double-murder suicide.

“This is extremely hard,” Nielsen said media Friday afternoon. “In the last two years, we’ve seen this happen too many times, and tragic events seem to keep happening in Boone County.”

Sheriff’s deputy Jacob Pickett was killed earlier this year during a police chase in Lebanon; shortly after his death, a teenage girl was killed in a car crash on U.S. 32 in Boone County.
