WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The death of a 19-year-old Purdue student, after she fell from a 10th-story window Saturday, was a suicide says the West Lafayette police.

Police say the student climbed through the top-floor window of The Hub, an apartment complex near Purdue.

West Lafayette Police Lt. Jon Eager told the Journal & Courier that witnesses, who were with the student that night, tried to talk with her before she left the room and jumped.

Police have identified the student as Jessica Marrs, from California. She was studying at Purdue’s School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

“The family has requested privacy in this matter and has asked that the university not release additional details,” said Katie Sermersheim, Purdue’s dean of students. “We are saddened any time we experience a student’s death and offer our condolences and support to her family and friends.”

Eager told the Journal & Courier it was unclear if alcohol played a factor, and said an autopsy is planned.
