GREENWOOD, Ind.–A global technology company celebrated the opening of its new central Indiana fulfillment center in Greenwood Monday.

Pitney Bowes provides shipping, mailing, data, and e-commerce services for businesses. They opened a 450,000 square-foot facility, which will also handle deliveries and returns with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“I came from Ohio. I understand a little about the goodness and the hard work ethic of the Midwest and Indiana and this particular facility exemplifies that,” Pitney Bowes CEO Marc Lautenbach told our newsgathering partners WISH-TV.

They hope to have over 300 full-time employees working there in the coming year.  Pitney Bowes also operates other divisions in central Indiana and they employ about 500 Hoosiers.

Fulfillment centers enable ecommerce merchants to outsource warehousing and shipping. This relieves online business of the necessary physical space to store all products, which helps merchants who don’t have the ability to directly manage inventory.

Sellers send merchandise to the fulfillment center, and the outsourced provider ships it to customers for them.
