INDIANAPOLIS— A stolen car involved in a police pursuit crashed into an east side apartment building Sunday night, starting a fire and injuring a person inside.

IMPD officers heard shots were fired just before 8:30 along North Mitthoeffer Road when an officer saw what he believed to be a blue Toyota Corolla reported stolen Saturday in an armed carjacking.

When the officer tried to conduct a traffic stop to find out why shots had been fired and the carjacking, the Corolla fled, driving south on Mitthoeffer at speeds up to 80 mph.

The car crashed into a building at the Brookview Apartments in the 1200 block of North Mitthoeffer Road just off of 10th street, catching fire and causing lacerations to one person inside. He was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition.

Another person inside unknowingly helped the driver, who was able to escape.

“One of the witnesses actually helped him out of the car. She didn’t know what was going on and didn’t know the police were chasing him. All of a sudden, he ran through and ran out of their back sliding patio door and out the building to the north east,” said IMPD Captain Harold Turner.

Police believe that if all the incidents are connected, the suspect is a serious violent felon. He is described as a black man possibly in his 20s, wearing a blue jersey.

If you know where this man is, be sure to call IMPD immediately.
