INDIANAPOLIS — A damaged dam near 16th Street is to blame for the low water levels in the White River.

Indy DPW said Tuesday it is working with Citizens Energy to repair the Emerichsville dam near 16th Street and White River Parkway.

Repair work will begin sometime after 3 p.m. Tuesday and includes shoring up the dam to stop water levels from dropping, according to Indy DPW Director Dan Parker.

“Between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. [Tuesday&#93, work will begin to repair the dam. During that time, motorists will see some lane restrictions near the work area, which includes Lafayette Road near West 16th St and North White River Parkway West Drive. Traffic delays are expected,” Parker said.

Parker said there is no public safety risk to people living downstream, and Citizens Energy said its water supply is unaffected and safe to drink.

Indy DPW is working with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to monitor the dam for changing conditions.
