A small plane crashed in the parking lot of the Traders Pointe Plaza, Sunday. No one was injured; however, many are saying the pilot, Greg Mahler is lucky to be alive.

Mahler says he was only in the air for about 10 minutes before his brand new engine gave out, forcing him to crash land in the Traders Pointe Mall parking lot and eventually landing in a ditch near Dicks Sporting Goods store.

“He obviously knew what he was doing, because somehow he maneuvered all the way through here without hitting light poles or people or cars or anything else,” said witness Ron Watson. “He actually almost, there was a woman walking in the parking lot, he barely missed her she ran as the plane came over.”

Mahler, who is a flight instructor in Indianapolis, notified his wife of the crash in a voicemail.

WIBC hosts Hammer and Nigel covered the audio and more details about the story in today’s edition of “Is This Anything?”

Nigel:

“Can you imagine being his wife and getting that voicemail message? ‘Hi honey, I crashed the plane. Gimmie a call back, please!’”

Hammer:

“We’ve actually had this conversation in our house where if something goes wrong and all hell’s breaking loose, you start by saying, ‘I’m okay, but… I’m okay, but the house exploded. I’m okay, but I crashed the airplane.’”
