MONROE COUNTY, Ind. — Police in Monroe County are investigating after an Indianapolis man was killed and two others were injured in a shooting at a Halloween party.

Kemontie Johnson, 21, of Indianapolis, was shot at around 12:30 a.m. Sunday during an off-campus costume party hosted by IU’s chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi.

Johnson died several hours later of gunshot wounds to the neck and body.

A second victim was shot in the head and is being treated for brain swelling at an Indianapolis hospital, reports The IU Daily Student. A third person was treated for injuries at the scene.

The shooting took place at Kappa Alpha Psi’s “A Nightmare in B-Town” costume party. The party was held in an event space at Eagle Pointe Golf Resort near Lake Monroe.

Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies are still looking for the shooter, who witnesses say ran from the party before police arrived.

“We do believe that the shooter came to Monroe County to attend the party and is not a local resident. We do not feel that anyone located near the area where the event took place would be in any form of additional danger,” the Sheriff’s Department wrote on Facebook.

IU Bloomington Provost Laura Robel released a statement about the shooting:

Three people were shot, one fatally, at an off-campus party Saturday night at which a number of  IU students were present.   Our thoughts are with all of our students who witnessed or were present at this terrible event and with the families of the victims.

None of the victims were IU students, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s office continues its investigation.   While we do not yet know all the facts involved, I do know that students who were present at the shooting may well need  to speak to counselors.  I urge students in this position to contact IU Counseling and Psychological Services at 812-855-5711.  Additionally, we are making counselors available for walk-in appointments.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the shooting should call the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department at 812-349-2780.
