WASHINGTON — The Pentagon is preparing to send about 5,000 active-duty troops to the U.S-Mexico border by week’s end, Department of Defense officials said Monday.

The mission is to “harden and secure the border” between the two countries as migrants from Central America push through Mexico toward the United States.

The slow-moving caravan may not reach the border for weeks.
