President Donald Trump created a political firestorm yet again after he promised in a new interview this week to unilaterally end birthright citizenship.
The President did not say when he would sign the order; however, the Constitutional hurdle that Trump would have to overcome to subvert the 14th Amendment, which states “All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.”
WIBC political and legal correspondent Abdul-Hakim Shabazz joined Hammer and Nigel to discuss the issue Tuesday afternoon:
“I’d like to be less handsome, but we don’t always get what we want. This is pretty simple Civics 101. The 14th Amendment states, ‘All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.’ What part of that is confusing to people? This is pretty straightforward language that has been held up time and time again.
I know Lindsay Graham has said, ‘Well, we’ll just change the law.’ No, you can’t do that. Just like my friends who are big supporters of the Second Amendment say the language is clear, well guess what? That strict constructionism and language works both ways.”
