INDIANAPOLIS–A man who may have fired off a gun inside a house on the northeast side of Indianapolis was taken into custody after four hours negotiating with police. Police got the call Thursday around 6 p.m.

The house is in the Lawrence Lakes subdivision, near the intersection of 38th St. and German Church Rd.

WISH TV reported the man barricaded himself inside the home, so Indianapolis Metro Police called out their SWAT team, and also negotiators, who were able to get the man to come out.

“Our end goal with the police department is we don’t want to use our SWAT team,” said Capt. Michael Elder. “We want these people to come out on their own.”

The man may have had a mental illness or a psychotic episode, said police.

“We have SWAT here as a backup and we have one of the best SWAT teams in the nation. They’re ready to do what they need to do.”

Some people had to be evacuated while the negotiations went on.
