(NOBLESVILLE, Ind.) – Early voting has closed, with a final flood of voters capping what’s been record-breaking turnout in the runup to Tuesday’s election.

In Marion County, polls stayed open for nearly two hours beyond the noon poll closing time because so many people were still waiting in line. Under state law, anyone already in line when the polls close is still entitled to vote. At the Hamilton County Government Center, the line to vote snaked around the block in downtown Noblesville.

Hamilton County voters say it was easier to get time away from work or child care to vote on Monday than it will be on Election Day. And some were betting that an estimated half-hour wait is still shorter than what Election Day will bring.

Marion County Clerk Myla Eldridge’s office reported 83,000 early votes, more than 20{bffd5afc92e71b4f5f13a397a060cceafb69d69a76b9485615fd77bd8b5e4a55} above the total for 2016. The 8,000 voters on Sunday marked a single-day record since early voting began 10 years ago.

Precinct polling places open at 6 a.m. and remain open until 6 p.m. on Election Day.
