INDIANAPOLIS- Monument Circle is getting an $8 million makeover thanks to a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc.

Lighting upgrades, a sound system and a nightly patriotic display are all in the works.

The circle will light up red, white and blue for about five minutes every night. The display will be accompanied by patriotic music, video projections and messages from war veterans.

But, the patriotic display is just one aspect of the project.

Jacqueline Eckhardt of Downtown Indy Inc. said organizers will program displays specific to big events downtown.

“Imagine big events like the college championship coming to town, being able to activate the Circle around that,” Eckhardt said. “With the month of May, being able to really utilize it as an amphitheater.”

It is all funded by a nearly $8 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to Downtown Indy Inc. and the Indiana War Memorials Commission.

The project will also include infrastructure updates and sharper lighting so Lady Victory — the statue at the top of the monument — can look even better.

Downtown Indy Inc. said work will start next year and the finished project launch on Veterans Day, days before next year’s Circle of Lights.
