RICHMOND, Ind.–Over $4 million in budget cuts will happen at Earlham College in the 2019-2020 school year.

The Richmond Palladium-Item reports that most of the cuts will happen to personnel with the elimination of 11 teaching positions, most of which are visiting professors on one year contracts. Two retiring professors won’t be replaced.

12 administrative or hourly positions will be cut.

“We believed that a process minimizing top-down input was the only way we could address our financial challenges,” Interim President Avis Stewart told the Richmond Palladium-Item.

“We considered staffing models created by faculty and sought input from a group of professors, administrators and staff members about administrative expenses. We also gave students opportunities to participate in these conversations,” Stewart said.

Earlham has been operating at a budget loss for several years.

Tuition at Earlham is about $45,500 per year.
