President Trump delivered his first-ever prime time address from the Oval Office on Tuesday night to make his case for funding a southern border wall, while emphasizing what he called the “growing humanitarian and security crisis” of surging illegal immigration.
“This is a humanitarian crisis – a crisis of the heart and a crisis of the soul,” said President Trump. “Last month, 20,000 migrant children were illegally brought into the United States – a dramatic increase. These children are used as human pawns by vicious coyotes and ruthless gangs. One in three women are sexually assaulted on the dangerous trek up through Mexico. Women and children are the biggest victims by far of our broken system.”
Indiana Congresswoman Susan Brooks said in an exclusive interview with WIBC host Tony Katz Wednesday morning that the President successfully made the case for a wall and is “trying to educate the American people about the crisis at the border.”
Brooks:
“I traveled to the border this summer – this was in the middle of the ‘family separation’ discussion, but what I saw absolutely shocked me. I went to a facility where we were holding over 1,300 boys. I think what he talked about last not is the untold story at the border. These were boys from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, about ages 8-15. And our laws don’t allow us to return those children to their country. Now their families are paying smugglers untold amounts of money to bring them to our country because they know they will be cared for. This really is a humanitarian tragedy, and what’s happening is that we are seeing unprecedented numbers of families and unaccompanied children being brought by smugglers to the border.
We had over 60,000 people come across our border in December alone. These are unprecedented numbers. Over 25,000 of those were what is called ‘family unit apprehensions’ – that was in November alone.”
