NATIONWIDE — Toyota is recalling 1.7-million vehicles in North America to replace potentially deadly Takata airbag inflators.

At least 23 people have been killed worldwide by the faulty inflators when they exploded in a cloud of flying shrapnel. Hunderds of other people have been injured because of the faulty inflators.

The recall affects a variety of Toyota models built between 2010 and 2017, including:

  • 2010 – 2016 Toyota 4Runner

  • 2010 – 2013 Toyota Corolla

  • 2010 – 2013 Toyota Matrix

  • 2011 – 2014 Toyota Sienna

Also included are certain Lexus models built between 2010 and 2017, including:

  • 2010 – 2012 Lexus ES359

  • 2010 – 2017 Lexus GX 460

  • 2010 – 2015 Lexus IS 250C and 350C

  • 2010 – 2014 IS-F

The 2010 through 2015 Scion XB is also included in the recall.

Toyota and Lexus dealers will either replace the airbag inflator or the entire airbag assembly. 

Owners will be notified in late January.
