DEARBORN COUNTY, Ind.–An armed man was shot and killed when he confronted police officers in Dearborn County Saturday morning.

Indiana State Police say the man pointed his gun at the officers when they got to a home on Five Point Road in northern Dearborn County.

He was hit by one of the officers’ bullets and provided immediate care to him until emergency responders got there. Once they arrived, they took him to a hospital in Batesville.

That man later died at the hospital. Neither of the officers were hurt.

The man who died has been identified as Christopher Schmitt, 58, and he lived at the home.

One of the officers in the shooting was Trooper Jordan Craig, a three veteran of the Indiana State Police.

State police say the second officer was Deputy Brian Wiegel. He has been with the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department for over a year.

The investigation has been handed over to the prosecutor’s office.
