INDIANAPOLIS–You now have a better chance of dying from an accidental opioid overdose, then dying in a car crash, said a new report from the National Safety Council, with data from the CDC. The chances of dying from an opioid overdose are one in 96.

The chances of dying in a car crash are one in 103, and dying from a fall are one in 114.
“We’ve made significant strides in overall longevity in the United States, but we are dying from things typically called accidents at rates we haven’t seen in half a century,” said Ken Kolosh, manager of statistics at the National Safety Council.
Falls are the third leading preventable cause of death, behind drug overdoses and car wrecks.
In Indiana, over 1,840 people died from drug overdoses in 2017, the last year for which data from the CDC was available.
The NSC also listed odds for other causes of death. Suicides were one in 88. Death by being shot was ay one in 285. The odds of being hit by a car and killed were one in 556, and the odds of drowning were one in 1,117.
