WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Trump is urging Congress to “choose greatness.”
“Tonight I was glad the President delivered a powerful message,” said Indiana Republican Senator Todd Young. “A unifying message about the importance of us rallying together as a country around a number of issues.”
In his State of the Union address, Trump called for an end to partisan bickering in Congress. He said the nation’s leaders must, quote, “choose whether we are defined by our differences, or whether we dare to transcend them.”
Trump also warned about foolish wars and what he called “ridiculous, partisan investigations.” He cited the thriving U.S. economy and said unity at home is needed to defeat America’s adversaries abroad.
Trump defended his demand for a massive border wall and called illegal immigration an urgent national crisis. He said it is a moral issue and called the southern border a “lawless state.”
The President did not declare a national emergency on the southern border, which could allow him to divert Defense Department funds to help construct a wall.
Trump announced that he will hold a second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un late this month in Vietnam. He also defended his trade policies, including the trade war with China. Trump accused Beijing of targeting U.S. industries and stealing America’s intellectual property.
Trump again claimed victory over ISIS in Syria and defended his plan to remove U.S. troops from the war-torn nation. He also called Iran the world’s leading state sponsor of terror and touted tough new sanctions on Tehran.
“I was also glad that the President reflected on the many accomplishments that a Republican President working with a Republican Congress was able to achieve over the last few years,” Sen. Young said.
Young said these accomplishments include tax reform, which he said has created around 45,000 jobs in Indiana alone, regulatory relief and wins on the national security front.
