ELKHART, Ind. – A former US attorney will lead a review of the policies, procedure, and culture of the Elkhart Police Department.

Mayor Tim Neese has selected Deborah Daniels, a partner at an Indianapolis law firm, to review the department’s use of force, training procedures, and culture and provide recommendations for improvement.

Daniels served as US Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana from 1988 to 1993. She was an assistant attorney general from 2001 to 2005.

The Elkhart Police Department has been under heavy criticism since two officers were accused of beating a handcuffed suspect. The two officers face misdemeanor battery charges.
