LEE COUNTY, AL — Nearly two-dozen people are dead after tornadoes ripped through eastern Alabama on Sunday and authorities warn the number could go higher.
At least 23 people were killed in Lee County, Alabama, about an hour and-a-half east of Montgomery. Emergency teams will be out early this morning, searching for injured and missing people.
The Lee County Sheriff says the damage looks like “someone had taken a blade and just scraped the ground.” He says a path of destruction about a half-mile wide stretched several miles.
The National Weather Service says at least a dozen tornadoes touched down in Alabama and Georgia yesterday afternoon.
Tornadoes destroyed a small airport and a fire station along the Alabama-Georgia state line. In the small town of Talbotton, Georgia, an hour and-a-half south of Atlanta, more than a dozen buildings were destroyed, including homes and at least one apartment building.
