WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Trump is poised to issue his first veto over his declaration of a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexican border.

Enough Republicans are expected to vote with Democrats to disapprove the executive order after Kentucky Republican Rand Paul announced he is opposing the border declaration. The House has passed the same resolution last week.

Paul warned that it is a “dangerous thing” to inhibit congressional checks and balances. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, also of Kentucky, is also saying the Senate will likely vote to block the emergency declaration.

Under the emergency order, Trump aims to bypass Congress and divert Defense Department funds to help build a massive border wall.
