AUSTIN, TX. — Colton Herta became the youngest driver ever to win an IndyCar race Sunday at the IndyCar Classic at Circuit of the Americas in Austin.

It was the first time IndyCar had run a race at the circuit which primarily serves as the host of the United States Grand Prix in the Formula One ranks.

Lady Luck put her gaze on the 18-year-old with a late caution with 15 laps to go, which forced race leaders Will Power to pit and Alexander Rossi to pit after Herta had pitted under the green flag just a couple laps earlier.

This had Herta restarting first and he cruised to the win. It’s also the first win for the newly formed Harding-Steinbrenner Racing team powered by Honda.

“I think we had really good pace,” Herta said of his day. “With only ten laps to go with really no ware on the tires were were in a really good place.”

At 18-years, 11-months, Herta, the son of former IndyCar driver Bryan Herta, is the youngest person to ever win an IndyCar race. Points leader Josef Newgarden took second for Team Penske. Ryan Hunter-Reay was third for Andretti Autosport and Graham Rahal was fourth for his first top five finish of the season.

“We’ll put our heads down from here, but the great sign is RLL (Rahal-Letterman-Lanigan Racing) is competitive,” Rahal said. “We were competitive at St. Pete, we were competitive here. Just a great start to the year.”

Sebastien Bourdais rounded out the top five in 5th.

The NTT IndyCar Series will have the week off ahead of their next race in Birmingham, Alabama. The Honda GP of Alabama rolls off the grid April 4th.
