SHELBYVILLE, Ind. — Veggie-based burgers, sausages, and hot dogs will soon be made in the Hoosier state.
Greenleaf Foods, SPC announced plans Monday to build a factory in Shelbyville and hire up to 460 people by 2021.
The 230,000-square-foot facility, to be built near the intersection of Interstate 74 and State Road 44, will be the largest plant-based protein facility in North America. The company expects the factory to be up and running by the end of 2020.
Greenleaf Foods makes plant-based, “meatless alternatives” to beef, pork, and chicken as well as other vegetarian and vegan foods.
Greenleaf Foods plans to fill some positions in 2019, but says most hiring will take place in 2020. Positions will be available in production, food safety, maintenance, purchasing, finance, and other areas. The company plans to set up job fairs closer to the factory’s opening date.
