FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Two children were rescued from a house fire on Tuesday thanks to an off-duty Bluffton firefighter and a fire crew.

Bluffton Fire Chief Don Craig told WANE 15 that the two children were inside their grandparents’ house when the fire started at the home on Bond Street.

When crews arrived fire was coming from one side of the home. An off-duty Bluffton firefighter was also running out of the home with one of the children. Firefighters were able to go in and get the second child.

The grandparents were home at the time of the fire, and had to go out a window. The two kids had been put down for a nap and were in another room.

The two kids were taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and thermal burns.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
