INDIANAPOLIS — You might get a little frustrated this weekend if you have to drive on the south side.

INDOT’s major construction project on I-65 starts Friday morning. INDOT spokesperson Mallory Duncan says the construction is needed.

“Indiana has been hit with some weird winters the last two or three years,” Duncan says. “They really do a toll on our roads.”

Duncan says INDOT will complete Segments 1 and 2 of their project this weekend, April 26-28. They will have I-65 Northbound, from Southport Road to I-465, down to one lane, starting Friday morning at 9. I-65 will be completely shut down from I-465 to the south split with I-70.

Duncan says I-465 West will be used as the official detour.

“All the way around to 70 East, back into the city, if you want to go back downtown. Or continue on 465, all the way to where it meets 65 North again, in the northwest corner of the loop.”

Duncan adds that it’s just a coincidence this project will start on the same weekend that the NRA is in town.

“It just happened to happen that way, but we have a ton of projects going on this summer in Marion County this summer, and a lot of it depends on when this 65 project is finished.”

INDOT hopes that waiting until Friday night to completely shut down a part of I-65 will give people coming to the convention enough time to get downtown.

“It will be a little slow going, but hopefully people can get to where they need to go.”

INDOT plans to open I-65 back up on Monday morning.
