INDIANAPOLIS — Dozens of baby raccoons are waiting to be returned to the wild after being rescued from a home on Indy’s southwest side.
Indianapolis Animal Care Services got a call Wednesday about a homeowner who apparently was raising dozens of baby raccoons as pets, reports WISH-TV.
Three animal control vans were dispatched to a house on Varna Drive, just off of Kentucky Avenue and I-465.
Again and again, neighbors watched animal control workers emerge from the house carrying crates filled with baby raccoons.
“That really surprised me that she had that many raccoons,” said Phil Rose, a neighbor who lives across the street.
Neighbors told WISH-TV that the homeowner is an animal lover, but pet raccoons are “just too much.”
“We’re not equipped and she’s not equipped no matter what she says,” Rose said.
IMPD said the plan is for the raccoons to be released into the wild.
Indiana law allows residents to keep raccoons as pets, as long as they have the proper permit. IMPD did not say if the woman had a permit.
