INDIANAPOLIS — Possible thunderstorms are racing into your race weekend.

The helium balloons have already been grounded for the IPL 500 Festival Parade because of high winds. Andrew White, national weather service meteorologist, says Indy is expecting winds of 20 to 25 mph, which could be followed by showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m.

The chance of thunderstorms does travel into Sunday. So, if you’re heading to the track you may want to pack for rain.

“It’s possible we could see some showers and thunderstorms again during the race time,” White said. “We’re expecting towards the end of the race that we’ll have some increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms.”

White says the primary threats for those storms are frequent lightning, gusty winds and hail.

If it does happen to storm, White says you should listen to the warnings the race track gives. He says if you see lightning or hear thunder that you should make your way inside or into your car.
