STATEWIDE — Indiana State Police are reminding Hoosiers to do their part to keep highways safe this Independence Day.

ISP is doing theirs by participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) and DUIEP (Driving Under the Influence Enforcement Project). These are both federally funded programs that allow extra patrols on Hoosier highways during the holiday.

ISP encourages drivers to remember the following safety tips:

  • Make sure your well rested
  • Avoid tailgating
  • Always signal lane changes
  • Obey posted speed limits-especially in construction zones
  • Make sure everyone is buckled up
  • Don’t drive distracted
  • Never drink and drive

ISP reports that 1,623 crashes occurred across Indiana during the three-day holiday period last year. There were 396 injuries, and six fatalities reported from those accidents.
