PORTER, Ind. — Not your run of the mill traffic stop in northern Indiana.
Back in June, Indiana State Police say one of their troopers in Porter County came across an unmarked police car going well over 100 miles per hour on I-94 heading west. Lights flashing and siren on.
It was odd, said the trooper to dispatch, because there were no active calls in Porter County at the time the cruiser was spotted to warrant a siren and light to be on. Troopers laid down stop sticks but the cruiser stopped before reaching them
The officer in the driver seat? Chicago police commander Ed Wodnicki. If that name sounds familiar, he is the lead detective working the investigation into the dropped charges against Jussie Smollett.
Wodnicki told troopers that he had been in Indiana to by ammunition for his gun when he was called to a critical incident in Chicago.
Chicago police superintendent Eddie Johnson said afterwards that he has reassigned Wodnicki from the Smollett investigation while police look into the traffic stop.
Jussie Smollett is the actor who was accused of false reporting in a hate crime police say he staged to get publicity in Chicago. Charges were initially filed that could have sent Smollett to prison, but those charges were suddenly dropped by prosecuting attorney Kim Fox.
The move stunned Chicago police who are now looking into why she dropped those charges.
