DETROIT — Contract talks between the United Auto Workers union and General Motors broke down over the weekend, forcing union members to continue picketing at several GM facilities all across the U.S.
UAW vice president Terry Dittes is telling union members the ongoing contract talks with General Motors have “taken a turn for the worse.” This is the 22nd day of a strike by the UAW.
“Very disappointed in GM,” said Gary Kujawa, a UAW member. “I thought they were coming close to an agreement, then when I saw the situation had gotten worse. Now I think we’re going to be out here for a while.”
Dittes said their latest offer addressed issues of wages, signing bonuses, job security, profit sharing, pensions, and more. He said the response Sunday morning from GM did not address what the UAW proposed, and reverted “back to their last rejected proposal and made little change.”
Mike Kanouse was asked what he’d tell GM if he had the chance.
“They need to get their s*** together,” Kanouse said. “It’s almost like it’s not so much about the money. It seems more like a power struggle.”
The strike has shut down a GM plant in Ontario, Canada. So far, that’s the only casualty of the strike. In Indiana, around 4,500 workers walked off the job nearly a month ago at plants and parts distribution centers in Fort Wayne, Bedford, Kokomo, and Marion.
