TERRE HAUTE, Ind.–You may need to rescan your TV channels this week if you get your channels through an antenna. The FCC says TV stations in Indianapolis, Evansville, Terre Haute, Ft. Wayne, and South Bend are changing frequencies.

You’ll still get the stations on the same channel. But, you’ll need to do a channel scan, the same as when you first set up the TV, said Jean Kiddoo, Chair, FCC Incentive Auction Task Force.

“They will still see the same channels as they’re used to seeing. The channel number that they tune the remote to will stay the same. But, behind the scenes the TV needs to be retrained to find the channel at its new place in the radio spectrum,” said Kiddoo.

She explained that the FCC is using more space on the radio spectrum for wireless and 5G, and that is why some channels are changing frequencies.

“Wireless carriers need more and more capacity because American are looking to use their mobile devices for more and more apps and more and more services.”

Kiddoo said the channels stay the same, with the same HD signal, because the channels are virtual. They don’t reflect the actual frequency the way they did before the switch to digital channels.

“In most of Indiana, with one exception, it’s happening this week. The stations are all scheduled to be off of their pre-auction frequencies by Friday,” said Kiddoo.
