INDIANAPOLIS--A truck driver who police say caused a crash that killed a woman and her 18-month old twin daughters has been deemed competent to stand trial.

Bruce Pollard’s trial has been scheduled for this upcoming January. He’s charged with reckless homicide and reckless operation.

Pollard’s attorney filed for a motion asking for a psychiatric exam after claiming Pollard showed signs of mental illness. The results of that exam showed that Pollard was competent to stand trial.

Alanna Koons, 29, and her 18-month-old twins June and Ruby were killed when prosecutors say Pollard, while behind the wheel of his semi-truck, got distracted reaching for his iced tea.

The accident happened on I-465 on the north side near North Keystone Avenue.

They also say Pollard didn’t notice traffic had slowed for construction and caused a chain reaction crash.

Seven other people were also injured in the crash.
